As I am learning new Sanskrit words, I sometimes feel inspired to share some of the ancient scripts. I will post them titled “Sanskrit Times” implying my quality time with Sanskrit.

Following my previous post on Gurus, I recalled a famous verse in Sanskrit on Gurus:

GururBrahma GururVishnu GururDevo Maheshwaraha
Guru Saakshaat ParaBrahma Tasmai Sri Gurave Namaha

As some of you might know, in India (Hinduism), the Gods are split mainly into three categories:

1. Brahma – The God of Creation
2. Vishnu – The God of Protection/Maintenance
3. Shiva – The God of Destruction/Transformation

The meaning of this verse is as follows:

Guru is Brahma (Creation), Guru is Vishnu (Protection), and Guru is Shiva (Destruction). Guru is Para Brahma (Absolute Truth). I salute such a Guru.

The Guru is seen as God himself – I really admire such a student-teacher relationship. If God is the ultimate source of all knowledge, Guru who points us to such a knowledge is also God.

I offer my respect to my loving gurus – Yogananda and Anandamayi Maa.
