Sanskrit Times – Episode 4

Hi Readers,

Hope you’re doing well, wherever you’re in the world. Today I am going to share a couple of verses from one of the great works of an 8th century Indian Philosopher Sri Adi Shankaracharya – Bhaja Govindam. It is a song/poetry that reminds the sage’s followers to reflect on the Truth (so as to be free from illusions of the mind). It starts like this:

bhaja govindaṃ bhaja govindaṃ
govindaṃ bhaja mūḍhamate |
samprāpte sannihite kāle
nahi nahi rakśhati ḍukriṅkaraṇe

Sing the name of Govinda*, Repeat the name of Govinda,
Serve Govinda, oh deluded mind!
At the time of your death,
Rules of grammar will not save you.

bāla stāvat krīḍāsaktaḥ
taruṇa stāvat taruṇīsaktaḥ |
vṛddha stāvat-chintāmagnaḥ
parame brahmaṇi koapi na lagnaḥ
bhaja govindaṃ bhaja govindaṃ
govindaṃ bhaja mūḍhamate

Childhood flickers by in play;
in youth, one is attached to sense pleasures;
in old age, one is burdened with worry and anxiety.
Life slips by without one ever paying heed to the attainment
of Self-Knowledge, knowing Brahman**
Oh deluded mind, sing the name of Govinda,
Repeat the name of Govinda, serve Govinda.

*Govinda literally means cowherd. Historically, it refers to the God Personality – Krishna. (Replacing this name with Jesus or Buddha – wouldn’t alter the intention of the author).

**Brahman is the Ultimate Reality, commonly referred as “Self”. Advaita Vedanta (Non-duality) philosophy says our Soul is the Self – but this knowledge is hidden because of our identification with body, and mind (which are bound to pleasure and pain). Self-realization is possible through the practices of Yoga.

I hope you find this post useful. Thank you so much for reading.

The Mirror – 2

Bountiful is your life, full and complete. Or so you think, until someone comes along and makes you realize what you have been missing all this time. Like a mirror that reflects what is absent rather than present, he shows you the void in your soul – the void you have resisted seeing. That person can be a lover, a friend, or a spiritual master. Sometimes it can be a child to look after. What matters is to find the soul that will complete yours. All the prophets have given the same advice: Find the one who will be your mirror! For me the mirror is Shams of Tabriz. Until he came and forced me to look deep into the crannies of my soul, I had not faced the fundamental truth about myself: that though successful and prosperous outside, I was lonely and unfulfilled inside.

From the novel ‘Forty Rules of Love’

These Words
Pre-written in my Heart – delivered as
A direct Message to the soul.

As I read the Message
Everything around me moves
I become a leaf – that remains static
In the windless space.

There is a Void
Yet, I am not hungry
Nor am I afraid,
I remain Empty.

Every time I read
I surrender to this Prophecy
I resurrect the broken Mirror in my Being
Thus spoke the complete Soul.

This Love, my love (15/08/2020)

While we were still together,
My enslaved mind couldn’t appreciate You much.
It’s been 5 years abroad now, and I have joyously visited You thrice
And vividly dreamed of You several times.

This morning as I woke up, I thought of You
I then had a quick vision of being a foreign flower
deeply rooted in Your immortal land
blossomed from Your loving lap.

O Divine Mother, embrace me with Your Love and Wisdom
that I may speak of Your Fragrance
wherever the destiny wind leads me to!

With Gratitude & Love,
A ‘distant’ child of You (India).

Happy Independence Day to fellow Indians e Buon Ferragosto agli amici Italiani!

Who are you?

When I pronounce your name*

Something inside me moves

And then, I cry, giggle and criggle

Who are you?

I was agnostic about Past Lives

But now, I am not sure

Were you a Friend, a Lover from the Past?

Please tell me, who are you?

I do not see you

Yet I find you real

Like invisible atoms in my being,

Do you hide yourself and play

the famous “who are you” game?

I must be you

How else could I explain our deep connection?

How else could I explain my own existence?

Am I not you? 😉

*The name can be many, for me, the name is Krishna!

An invitation to The Void Space

Dear Readers & Writers of all sorts,

Please be with me till the end of this post, if it’s safe.

It is not important to sit with an upright spine, but if you feel good about it, do it so.

Give yourself a half-smile.

Release the tightness of your body.

Relax into your peaceful smile.

Please don’t force anything. You’re good as you are, in your own way.

Trust this process, Trust this guidance.

Breathe in, stay with your breath as you breathe in.

Breathe out, stay completely with your breath as you breathe out.

Tap into that ‘Ease’ that you may feel right now.

Become a flow with breathing as your anchor.

Breathe in, Breathe out.

There is nowhere to go, nothing to do.

Stay here, with your breath, now.

If your mind brings something – a thought, a sensation or an emotion,

No matter how pleasant or unpleasant it might be,

Remain as an Observer and continue to stay here, with your breath.

You are safe here. You are beautiful here. You are your True Self here.

Welcome aboard. You are in the Void Space now.

Thank you for being here.

Please let me know how did it go in the comments. I’ll be happy to guide you further with obstacles that you might be facing.

Please visit my first-ever post here, where I gave some tips for the beginners in Meditation.

A gentle introduction to Yoga

The term Yoga, though popular, remains superficially understood by most of us. Despite having grown up in India, I always had thought Yoga is a form of physical exercise. If you think of Yoga the same way, this post is right for you.

The short story is that – Yoga means Union.
– Is it the union of the body, the mind and/or the soul?
– Is it the union of God’s Consciousness with the Human Consciousness?
– Is it the union of the soul and the Holy Spirit?

I leave it to you to decide. Depending on your personal identity – this may vary.
Let’s now look into different ways of attaining such a remarkable union.

1.Yoga as Action/Service (Karma Yoga)
– Action here implies nurturing the righteous (Dharma) way of living.
– You might want to read one of my earlier posts (jump to point 3 in the post).
– For example, Mahatma Gandhi is a Karma Yogi. (NB: The scripture Bhagavad Gita played a crucial role in Gandhi’s life.)

By dedicating all your works to Me, you will be freed from the bondage of good and bad results. With your mind attached to Me through renunciation, you will be liberated and will reach Me.

Bhagavad Gita

2. Yoga as ‘Asana
– This is the Yoga as we all know of. It is a set of body postures that involve gentle twisting, balancing poses accompanied by conscious breathing.
– This also includes Meditation.

3.Yoga as Devotion (Bhakti Yoga)
– This involves Prayers, Singing the Gods’ names with deepest yearning for the divine connection and so on.
– This is also called as the path of Love.

If one offers to Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water, I delightfully partake of that article offered with love by My devotee in pure consciousness.

Bhagavad Gita

4.Yoga as ‘Inner’ Wisdom (Gnana Yoga)
– Understanding the deepest mysteries of the human mind consciousness itself is a form of Yoga. You might translate this into Intellectual form of Yoga. As an example, Socrates is a Gnana Yogi.

An unexamined life is not worth living.

One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing.

I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.

Socrates

Having laid out these techniques, I’d also like to state that there is no one particular path for all beings. Probably, that is why we have different options, no? It’s been said that for a sincere aspirant, the path shall be laid before him/her. However, it is also evident that none of these paths are completely distinct from the rest.

It doesn’t matter if one is an atheist or a monotheist or a polytheist, these techniques remain valid to live a righteous living.

I hope this post was useful to you. Thank you for reading.

What do you think is your path, as of now? 🙂

This Love, my love (11/07/2020)

It is a Winter morning in Summer
You are the perfect rescue to my soul,
Filling my body with your fragrance
Warming my mind with your freshness
Bringing my whole existence an ever-new joy
There is no present, past, nor future with you
There is only timelessness, forever and eternal
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
As I drink the last sip, permit me to remain with you.

Faithfully,
A Tea Lover
